You can leave the step up ring and filter on all the time.The hood part comes off easily for storage.

Notes on Nikon FF-CP11 Neutral Color Filter for Coolpix ...- I just received my Nikon FF-CP11 after pre-ordering several months ago. It is a fine quality special size NC filter. Still backordered is the Nikon HN-CP14 Lens Hood for Coolpix 8800. Bad news! The instructions included with FF-CP11 neutral color filter clearly indicate that this filter will NOT work with the lens hood! The HN-CP14 lens hood is made to accept standard 67mm filters.

So I will return this FF-CP11 because I intend to keep the lens hood installed at all times. I will order a high quality 67mm NC filter.

Beware!! You cannot use both the CP11 filter and the HN-CP14 lens hood at the same time!!! IF you want an NC filter it must be 67mm. That means you need a new 67mm lens cap, too...
