Tamron now offers a lightweight, compact, high-image-quality telephoto zoom lens with macro capability of 1:2 that can be used with digital cameras. The Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro 1:2 Lens is a Di type lens using an optical system with improved multi-coating designed to function with digital SLR cameras as well as film cameras. With this 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens, flipping a macro switch in the focal length range of 180mm to 300mm obtains a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at a minimum focus distance as short as 37.4", enabling close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other objects that normally require the use of a specially designed macro lens. Moreover, this is a zoom lens that casually offers the distant capture and foreshortening effect pleasures of the 300mm ultra-telephoto world. Macro Magnification Ratio - 1 - 2 (at f=300mm MFD 0.95m) Diameter 3.0 x Length 4.6 (76.6 x 116.5mm) Weight - 435 grams (15.3 ounces)

Are you getting a Nikon 70-300 VR for this kind of money? No.

What you are getting is a lens that is sharp, contrasty, has a good macro mode on it, and costs $130 bux at the time I am posting this... one that will work with your D40/D40x/D60's focusing system.

Is it optically perfect? No. It has some CA, it is not very fast... but good heavens it is sharp, light and well made.

Buy it.

Summary for Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro ...- Excelente objetivo!!!

Summary for Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro ...- Got this for D40x , too much CA
Notes on Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro ...- I waited a whole week with anticipation for this lens. Now after trying for 2 days I'm very disappointed.
I have a Sigma 70-300 for my D70 (which works great) but can't work with my D40x so I ordered the Tamron because I heard it was pretty good. It shoots far and is about the same softness as the Sigma and would be a great lens but the CA (color fringing) is terrible. I live near the ocean and take lots of photos of ocean activities, surfing, canoe races etc. Purple color fringing was a big problem. Had to use photoshop to remove it, too much work.
I have owned Tamron lenses in the past with film SLRs and they were wonderful, but not this one.
Would I recommend this to anyone? Only if they can't or don't want to spend the money for the Nikon 70-300mm. I wish that I would have gotten the Nikon or Sigma with HSM. Which I am now looking into.
So if you want just a basic 70-300mm lens then this will probably work for you.

Notes on Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro ...- I would recomend this lens to anyone that needs a longer zoom for their Nikon D40. The motor is a bit loud but, to have one in a lens of this price is great.

Summary for Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro ...- Not too bad
Notes on Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro ...- I got this lens for my Nikon D40 and it takes some good shots and some not so good shots, but that is true for a lot of lenses if you don't have a steady hand. But, if you keep a steady hand, you will get good results with this lens. I do have some nice shots of birds and landscapes.
It all depends on the settings used and the lighting. I've noticed, latley, the lens is acting slow on focusing. I thought mayabe the battery on my D40 was low, but it was indicating full. But, I like the lens enough to use it for my wildlife shots and landscapes. It is great for a budget, like mine. If you are thinking of ordering one, make sure the place you buy from will return it with no problems first incase you don't like it.
